“I made this item you are going to buy, but I didn't get paid for it.” This is the chilling message from Zara factory workers to Istanbul shoppers found sewn into Zara’s clothing last week.

Over 150 employees are owed upwards of 650 000 euros for sewing Zara’s clothing. When the factory closed without paying its employees, Zara’s parent company, Inditex, vowed to create a “hardship fund” to pay back the workers for lost wages. It’s now been over a year and the workers haven’t seen a cent.

Zara makes billions in profit each year. It can easily cover these lost wages yet instead it is greedily avoiding paying wages to working families.

Zara is owned by the largest fashion retailer in the world, Inditex. Last year, Inditex made over $5 billion in profits. Despite its claims that it is committed to improving working conditions  in its factories, it has still taken over a year to start paying back its factory workers and wants to only offer a quarter of the owed wages.

Zara has already profited off these clothes and yet the workers that made them are struggling to support their families. It’s time Zara heard the message loud and clear: stop putting profits before people and pay up.
