Treasury officials just confirmed that the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT) lets oil companies claim the cost of cleaning up oil spills as a tax deduction.
That means the fossil fuel industry can trash our environment and then people like you are forced to pay to clean up the mess!
The PRRT is broken, but you can help fix it. Already more than 15,000 SumOfUs members have called on Treasurer Scott Morrison to fix this mining royalties system. Now it’s time to step up the fight.
To win this, we need your help so our voice is louder than the fossil fuel lobby’s. With a donation from you today, we could print an ad in Scott Morrison’s local paper so he can’t ignore the demand to get this system fixed.
Will you chip in to make Big Oil and Gas pay their fair share of tax?
The Petroleum Resource Rent Tax is a tax on the profits of petroleum projects.
But it’s broken: fossil fuel giants like Chevron, Shell, and BP are cheating Australians like you out of billions by digging up our precious natural resources for free. At today’s prices none of Australia’s offshore gas projects will ever pay any royalties.
And now, your tax dollars could also subsidise the clean up costs of oil spills.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
We have a chance to win this before the next budget in May, but we can only do this with your help.
Scott Morrison’s already feeling the heat. The Treasury has launched an inquiry into the PRRT. But sources are telling us that the Government is being fiercely lobbied by the fossil fuel industry behind closed doors.
We need you to help get this ad in Morrison’s local paper to turn up the pressure. If we win this, we can finally make Big Oil and Gas pay their fair share.
But if we lose this, our country stands to lose billions of dollars that could be funding crucial public services like our schools, hospitals, and infrastructure.
Can you help win this fight? If just 300 SumOfUs members like you chip in about $30 each, we can get this ad in the paper now.
Will you please chip in to make Big Oil and Gas pay their fair share?
SumOfUs is almost entirely funded by small donations from people like you chipping in just a few dollars here and there to make our country a better place.
Without your support, we wouldn’t exist. We take no money from governments or corporations -- that means we stay entirely independent and able to do the work that needs to be done.
That’s why we need you to help fix this: to make the fossil fuel industry pay their fair share so that money is spent on making our community a better place.
Will you join? Chip in now to make Big Oil and Gas pay their fair share.
