Australia's Privacy Laws are bring updated for the first time in decades. We need to make sure that these crucial laws are brought into the 21st century. That's why we're calling for a Children's Data Code to be introduced which protects kids online.
Momentum for such laws is growing with the UK and Ireland introducing some of the first of their kind.
But to achieve such a breakthrough here we need to show MPs that there is strong community demand by flooding their offices with real letters from their constituents.

Here's the letter we've drafted:
Dear MP,
I am writing to express my concerns regarding the lack of protection for the privacy of Australian children when they access websites and online apps.
[We'll insert your personal message here - why does online privacy for children matter to you?]
I understand that while the Privacy Act 1988 provides protection for a range of personal information, there are no special provisions for the protection of children’s information.
Australian law needs to recognize our children’s potential vulnerability when using websites and online apps, as these expose them to:
Data gathering and online profiling, that results in advertisements targeted to the child and ongoing intense marketing pressure to match their peers
Data sharing that enables cyberbullying, grooming and other online exploitation
Selling on sensitive personal and family information to undisclosed commercial corporations, and
The creation of a digital footprint in childhood that grows through childhood and follows them into adulthood. All of this data could be used to shape their futures in ways we can’t even imagine. For example, data collected about a kid’s health at 12 could be used to deny health insurance in their 60s.
As a constituent I would ask you to ensure that the upcoming review of the Privacy Act strengthens and improves the protection of children’s data.
Yours sincerely,
