We have some amazing news to share: Canada will be banning single-use plastics because of SumOfUs members like you pushing hard for comprehensive plastics laws.
This is amazing progress towards stopping the plague of plastic from mega-corporations like Nestle, Coca-Cola and Tim Hortons that will now have to take responsibility for all their plastic waste.
The ban of single-use plastics in Canada couldn’t have happened without your support. Last year, thanks to 9 months of sustained pressure from SumOfUs members, every single member of parliament voted for a progressive plastics motion to tackle plastic pollution at its source, especially targeting single-use plastics.
We delivered your names to Environment Minister McKenna -- and got on national TV and radio.
When the motion finally passed, our petition of over 172,000 names had been mentioned many times in the House of Commons by the MP who introduced the motion and many MPs said that the thousands of calls you made pressured them to vote in favour of the motion.
Today’s announcement is a result of this pressure and is a major step to stop the scourge of plastics.
And while we celebrate today’s win, we have to be ready to keep the heat on. The plastics ban doesn’t take effect for another year and a half and the full list of items in the ban hasn’t been announced yet.
We’re going to need to push the government to include things like plastic bottles and containers from corporations like Nestle and Coca-cola -- a major source of pollution.
This work was only possible because of you. Your support has helped us get your message into the House of Commons, on national television and radio and into the offices of every MP in Canada. We know that we’re going to have to keep fighting to ensure that Canada makes real progress on plastics pollution.
Will you chip in to keep our work on the global plastics crisis going?
