The Pebble Mine is a massive open-pit copper and gold mining project that threatens the largest sockeye salmon run in the world, in Bristol Bay, Alaska.
The good news is that we could be on the brink of stopping it once and for all. Over the last four years the project has been coming closer and closer to being scrapped. Investors have pulled out and Trump’s administration recently upheld Obama-era restrictions that propose to limit mine waste disposal in Bristol Bay.
The bad news is that another major Canadian mining company, First Quantum Minerals, is trying to revive the project by investing $150 million initially and another $1.3 billion down the road. But we can stop First Quantum from reviving this dangerous project.
Tell First Quantum: don't invest in the Pebble Mine project.
Over 40 million sockeye salmon come to Bristol Bay every year and the bay is home to all five species of Pacific salmon found in North America. The Pebble Mine project could destroy up to 150 km of salmon supporting streams and thousands of acres of critical wetlands.
This destructive project is the brainchild of one Canadian mining company Northern Dynasty, and now another, First Quantum Minerals, wants in on the profits. It’s time we stood up against these mining corporations that justify causing mass environmental destruction just to line their pockets.
First Quantum’s AGM is fast approaching and we want to show its executives that there is no support for its investment in the dangerous Pebble Mine project. A huge outcry now could pressure First Quantum to make the right decision.
First Quantum: protect critical wild salmon habitat and don’t invest in the Pebble Mine project.
SumOfUs has been working to stop the Pebble Mine for years. When over 170,000 caring members like you signed a petition calling on Rio Tinto mining to pull its investment in the dangerous project, and over 1,000 more members chipped in to send an Alaskan Indigenous delegation to its AGM, the mining giant listened and pull its funding. We know we have the power to influence shareholders to prevent investments in disastrous projects like Pebble Mine.
