The government is rushing through a vote on the future of Trident in just a few days’ time.
The Trident nuclear submarine programme is based on the terrifying principle of 'mutually assured destruction'. It serves no military goal and its renewal would cost at least £205 billion of public money.
Now the Conservatives are rushing through a vote on renewing Trident in a bid to cause maximum embarrassment to the Labour party, which is split on the issue. But Trident is too important to be used as a political football. Its renewal would not only put our safety at risk -- it would also enrich some of the largest weapons manufacturers in the world at the expense of the British public.
MPs will be voting on Trident on 18 July. Let’s tell them we want to live in a safe, clean and prosperous world -- not in the shadow of annihilation.
Tell our leaders that we want them to prioritise green jobs and a safe planet, not war profiteering from Trident.
£205 billion of public money could go a long way towards creating the green jobs our economy needs, fighting the real threat of climate change and funding our desperately underfunded public services. Instead, the government wants to put that money into the pockets of some of the world’s biggest weapons manufacturers like BAE systems.
BAE has no qualms about selling its other killing machines to some of the worst human rights abusers in the world, including Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. And tragically, many weapons sold to these regimes have reportedly ended up in the hands of terrorists -- a much larger global threat than the outdated, Cold War fear of state-wielded nuclear weapons.
As a community, we’ve stepped up time and again to help to build a future that puts people over profits. Let’s step up now to tell our leaders we don’t want them to pour hundreds of billions into an outdated weapons system that can’t respond to the real threats facing us in the 21st Century. We want them to invest in our future, by prioritising building a green economy, tackling climate change and funding our public services.
Tell our leaders that we want green jobs and a safe planet, not war profiteering.
