We have troubling news. Peruvian farmer Máxima Acuña has been hospitalized after an alleged attack by private security guards working for mining companies Newmont and Buenaventura.
These are the same companies she thwarted from building a giant gold and copper mine next door. And it’s not the first time she has been attacked for standing up against controversial mining developments.
SumOfUs has supported Máxima against Newmont Mining, the world’s second largest gold company, time and time again, leading to her winning the “Green Nobel” for her heroic leadership to stop the gold mine.
Newmont and Buenaventura need to know this violence can’t go on. And we need to make sure they hear this message loud and clear, and where it will hurt them most: their pocket books. That’s why we are asking Larry Fink, CEO of one of the world’s largest private investment firms, to denounce the violence now and divest from the companies.
We know that private security agents will keep harassing her until she gives up.
We can't afford to let that happen. Will you help make today extra special for Máxima and commit to keeping her safe?
