The merger between Monsanto and Bayer would be a nightmare for our farmers. The two companies would great one mega-conglomerate, with control of 70% of the market. Prices for seeds and pesticides would skyrocket, driving many farmers into ruin.
We’ve seen this nightmare scenario before -- a long time ago: during the Great Depression, fields were abandoned, cows left to die in the barns as farmers and families driven off their land and left to desperately cobble together a living any way they could.
Think that can’t happen again? Just watch what happens when Monsanto and Bayer combine to seize control of our entire system of food production from top to bottom. We need to stop this merger at all cost to protect our farmers.
Can you chip in to save our farmers?
Our plan is simple: With your gift, we will plaster the streets of St. Louis, Missouri -- the headquarters of Monsanto -- with the billboards featuring farmers talking about this deal would mean to them. We want to make sure that Monsanto Execs have to face up to the consequences of their actions, be it on their way to work, on the school run or when they go to the supermarket.
The stories of farmers struggling for survival are gut-wrenching. The agricultural sector is ever more consolidating with soon only three huge companies left, splitting up the spoils of their relentless profit-seeking among themselves.
Make no mistake: it is not just farmers who suffer if this deal comes to pass. Higher prices for farmers translate into higher prices at the grocery store. And more and more sterile, pesticide soaked crops treated with a finish of genetic engineering. If this merger goes ahead it will be the end of our bees.
This is not a future I want for my children.
Can you chip in now to save our farmers from Monsanto?
