Tory leadership hopeful Theresa May is so set on renewing Britain’s Trident nuclear submarine program she’s calling for a vote before July 21. Trident is based on the terrifying principle of 'mutually assured destruction', serves no military goal and it will cost at least £205 billion.
May is clearly trying to position herself as a ‘strong, PM-ready’ leadership contender with this calamitous decision. But this ego-driven political gambit not only puts the future of our planet at risk, it will enrich some of the largest weapons manufacturers in the world.
As if the risk of annihilation for no strategic purpose wasn’t enough, think of the green jobs -- jobs that would ensure a safe, clean and prosperous future -- that money spent on submarines and warheads could buy instead.
Tell our Parliament to vote NO to expensive, deadly and useless nuclear submarines.
A massive portion of that £205 billion will go to BAE systems, the third-largest weapons manufacturer in the world, which built the last fleet of submarines. BAE has no qualms about selling its other killing machines to some of the worst human rights abusers in the world, like Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
Ironically, many weapons sold to these regimes have reportedly ended up in the hands of terrorists -- a much larger global threat than the outdated, Cold War fear of state-wielded nuclear weapons.
Of course, the real threat facing humanity isn’t a Russian or North Korean atomic bomb, or even terrorism -- but the looming, global and immediate threat of climate change. Handing billions over to war profiteers instead of renewable energy and education isn’t just foolhardy, it’s a death wish.
Join our call to Parliament: Say NO to war profiteering and YES to green jobs and a safe planet.
