RSF paramilitaries just murdered 460 patients, families and medical staff in a maternity hospital in Darfur, in western Sudan. This is the latest horror in Sudan’s two-year genocidal war which has seen 150,000 people massacred and 12 million displaced.
Experts say that the United Arab Emirates is smuggling weapons to the paramilitaries – and a new report reveals it includes equipment originally from the UK.
The UK government is clearly hoping that the lack of public attention on the genocide in Sudan will mean their and the UK arms industries’ involvement will fly under the radar. But if tens of thousands of us shine a spotlight on the UK government’s enabling of this horrific violence, we can force them to cancel these exports.
Tell the UK government: stop shipping arms for genocide.
New information shows that on 27 September 2024 – after the UN Security Council received images alleging the presence of a type of small-arms equipment in Sudan which is categorised as ‘ML14’ – the UK government issued an “open individual export licence” for this same category of products to be shipped to the UAE.
These types of licences allow unlimited amounts to be exported with no obligation to monitor where it ends up. Experts point out that UK and treaty law requires the government NOT to authorise arms exports where they might be used in international crimes.
This reckless, and potentially illegal move by the UK government is pouring fuel on this appalling humanitarian tragedy. But if this incredible community comes together to hold the UK government to account we can demand that these deadly arms sales are cancelled.
Tell the UK government: stop shipping arms for genocide.
