Charlottesville showed us that in the eight short months since Donald Trump became president, this country has changed. Our president would rather sympathize with white supremacists than denounce the racism that is dividing America.
We’re no longer just appalled by our president’s actions; it’s come to the point where we’re worried if we can ever go back.
There’s one way we can take away Donald Trump’s most powerful platform: Kick him off Twitter.
For any other Twitter user, this would be a slam dunk. President Trump has violated Twitter’s Terms of Service countless times. He’s sympathized with and retweeted white supremacists, he has supported violence against journalists and critics and has even threatened nuclear war with North Korea via Twitter.
Not even the president is entitled to abuse Twitter. Tell Twitter to revoke the president’s privileges.
At first, taking Donald Trump off Twitter may seem frivolous, almost silly. But then we remember that Trump prefers to announce major policies, even hint at major staff changes, on Twitter before using traditional channels like press conferences and releases. Taking Trump off Twitter would make him rely on that essential institution of democracy he’s done so much to undermine: the free press. More than that, it’s the right thing to do.
And Twitter has already stood up to Trump when it counts. Twitter was reportedly the only Silicon Valley corporation to refuse to help the Trump White House build a Muslim registry. Notably, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey wasn’t asked to join Trump’s controversial (and now-disbanded) business advisory council—because he probably would have refused. We just need to encourage Twitter to do the right thing one more time: ban Trump.
Will you help us push Twitter to stand up to Trump when it matters one more time? Tell CEO Jack Dorsey to cancel Donald Trump’s Twitter account.
Now is the perfect time to do ban Trump. CEOs, staffers and staunch Republicans are fleeing Trump’s side in droves. His comments on Charlottesville—and clear alignment with racists, Neo-Nazis and white supremacists—represented a line too far to cross. Nearly 100,000 SumOfUs members stood up and told Silicon Valley that participating with the Trump agenda is no longer an option—and Charlottesville showed us what’s at stake.
Twitter, it’s come to this. Ban Trump’s account now.
