We all thought it could never happen. But it has. America just went from its first Black president to a breathtakingly uninformed bigot openly supported by the KKK.
But this isn't just about America. Trump is just the latest example of the far-right surging worldwide. Trump is Marine Le Pen. Trump is Golden Dawn in Greece and Pegida in Germany. Trump is the Bulgarian "migrant hunters." Trump is Brexit.
And the global rise of ethno-nationalist far right benefits no one more than the huge multi-national corporations who pollute our planet, exploit workers, and undermine democracy.
To fight back, we will need to do the following:
- Recognize that the rise of the racist right and multinational corporate power are not two unrelated trends. They are mutually reinforcing and backed by the same forces. And as people around the world have lost jobs to automation and austerity governments have shredded the safety net, the conditions are ripe for continued far-right backlash.
- Organize smarter and better with a broader set of allies -- including workers, shareholders, consumers, and racial, ethnic and religious minorities. And redouble our efforts to build the kind of global internet-driven movement needed to take on multinationals around the globe.
- Advocate for pro-active solutions that address the fears of working people falling behind in the global economy. Being against Trump and Trump-ism isn't enough. We need to articulate our vision of what we're for.
It's impossible to understate how dangerous this moment is for the world -- and we're launching an emergency fundraising drive to fight back. Will you chip in now?
