Flanked by private airline executives, Donald Trump just announced his plans to privatize the county’s air-traffic control system.
Trump says the plan will update our “horrible” air-traffic control system -- but flying in the U.S. has never been safer. We know what this really is: yet another corporate handout that puts flyers at the whims of corporations that put profits before their best interests.
The advocacy group Flyers’ Rights said the plan would create an “airline controlled corporate monopoly” that would have “unbridled power” to hike passenger prices and add new fees. We can’t stand by and watch yet another public good be handed over for the corporate world to make a quick buck. Our safety deserves better.

Big surprise -- Trump’s plan is light on the specifics. But we do know the plan would take two-thirds of the air-traffic control system -- some 13,000 employees -- off the government payroll. But don’t think that will save taxpayers money: those costs will most likely be passed off to passengers through onerous fare hikes.
Meanwhile, privatization means the system will report to business executives who report only to shareholders, not elected officials meant to represent you and me. That’s bad news for rural flyers, who could see decreased service under a private system that stands to profit most by serving major cities.
But this isn’t just about air-traffic control: it’s about a path towards privatization that puts more and more public goods under the control of corporations. We want our safety in the hands of elected officials that answer to us, not corporations willing to cut corners for a profit. That’s why we’re coming together now to tell Trump “no” to air-traffic control privatization.
Call on Trump to ditch his plans to privatize our flight safety.
