It looks like Donald Trump is getting ready to provide presidential cover to the worst corporate merger the agri-chemical industry has ever seen. Trump has met with the CEOs from both Bayer and Monsanto to discuss their nightmare $66-billion buyout.
Together Monsanto and Bayer would be the biggest seed company AND the biggest pesticide company in the world with control over nearly everything we eat and grow. It means more bee-killing neonics in our fields, more toxic glyphosate on our plates, and more corporate control over our food supply.
Presidents almost never get involved with individual deals like this. And, do we have to say it? CEOs are not the only people affected by this monster merger. If Trump is going to speak to the super-rich, he should speak to ALL stakeholders—beekeepers, independent farmers and of course, SumOfUs members—before giving tacit approval to a deal that so obviously breaks so many anti-trust rules.
Tell President Trump he has to meet with everyone impacted by this merger from hell. Not just CEOs.
This is a picture of what the next four years will look like: A backroom meeting between Trump and ultra-rich CEOs to help a giant mega-corporation secures an iron grip on the global market. We need to strike back fast, and we need to do it now. We owe it to ourselves after all the hard work we’ve done together to stop this merger. People before profits, every time.
We have seen again and again what happens when powerful corporations get their way. If Bayer’s merger succeeds, it will put 59% of the world’s seeds and 64% of its pesticides in the hands of just four companies. That will mean higher seed prices, higher pesticide use, more farmers getting sued and almost no accountability. We can stop this merger, but we need to put stakeholder voices at the forefront.
Now that you’ve met with the CEOs, Mr. President. It’s time to meet with us.
