While Canada’s federal Minister of Environment meets with other world leaders in Poland at COP24, corporations work behind-the-scenes to suppress meaningful action.
The situation is bitterly ironic. Global leaders are falling drastically behind in taking action against the gravest threat our species has ever faced. All the while corporations, who are most responsible for the crisis, move to block progress.
Experts continue to warn global leaders that we are close to the point of no return. They predict that the ecological and human toll will be so vast in its scale that the first and second world wars will pale in comparison.
Canada is as much a culprit as anyone. Just this year, Trudeau bought an aging pipeline project that carries tar sands oil from US pipeline giant Kinder Morgan with our tax dollars. And he continues to approve offshore oil drilling by companies such as BP and Husky -- the latter of which was responsible for the biggest oil spill in Newfoundland history last month.
The world is watching the COP and the Liberal government is anxious about maintaining their image.
Sign our petition and hold Trudeau and McKenna’s feet to the fire to keep Canada below the 1.5C threshold.
Make no mistake about it, we are facing the gravest threat our species has ever faced, and corporations secretly dictate the outcome by suppressing meaningful action.
An investigation by the New York Times just revealed that global leaders are drastically failing to meet their climate targets and evidence continues to pile up that corporations are to blame.
Although world leaders made strong pledges in the Paris Agreement to radically decarbonize their economies and accelerate a just transition toward renewable energy, Canada and the US continue to be notorious outliers.
Now, while all of Canada watches its Minister of Environment represent us at COP24, is the best time to call on it to pledge real climate solutions.
