Over the past year, construction of the new Trans Mountain pipeline has been hampered by climate change-driven extreme weather and the pandemic.
Record breaking heat, wildfires, flooding and, most recently, rerouted rivers and landslides have left sections of construction buried under landslides or washed away. These extreme weather events have meant more and more delays along the pipeline route and construction route.
Two years ago, the construction of the pipeline was an estimated $12.6 billion, but that final price will be much higher due to the flooding and delays, some experts believe it will be over $20 billion dollars.
Trans Mountain even recently admitted the cost of construction will be significantly higher – but will not give any updates of the cost or the timeline.
All Canadians are owners of the pipeline – after all, Trans Mountain is paid for by taxpayers money. So we deserve to at the very least know the real cost of the pipeline before billions more public dollars go into a project that will put communities and the climate further at risk.
Sign the petition calling on Trudeau’s government to stop the construction of the pipeline until a formal review of the cost of pipeline is done.
Updated climate science from international bodies has confirmed that the Trans Mountain pipeline is incompatible with efforts to limit global warming to 1.5ºC.
And not only that, the pipeline is a reckless project that would increase tanker traffic through the Salish Sea by seven hundred percent, endangering the already struggling Southern Resident Orca whale population.
This pipeline is a terrible idea – polling suggests Canadians are not willing to spend billions more on the project. Stopping construction for a review of excessive costs would be a devastating blow to Trans Mountain’s reputation, and would add to the evidence as to why the pipeline should be stopped for good.
Will you sign a petition calling on Trudeau to stop the construction of the project and do a review of the pipeline?
Time and time again, hundreds of thousands of SumOfUs members like you have spoken out to stop the construction of pipelines such as Keystone XL and the Northern Gateway. And because of people like you supporting land and water defenders, these pipelines have been stopped.
And we can stop this Trans Mountain pipeline, but only if you speak out now.
