With more than 300 stores across the UK, and a further 140 stores abroad, Arcadia's Topshop can afford to pay its depot workers a real Living Wage.
The real Living Wage is the amount a person needs for the basic costs of living. The Living Wage Foundation has set the Living Wage at an hourly pay rate of £8.45. But employees at distribution sites in the West Midlands held strikes ahead of Christmas last year to fight for fairer pay; Topshop is not budging as its parent company, Arcadia Group, refuses to increase their wages. Now, they are forced to strike again at the sites in Solihull and Leeds February 24 and 26.
Calling itself "a shopping institution", it surely has more than enough money to pay a fair day’s work with a fair day’s pay.
Tell Topshop to pay workers the real Living Wage.
People power has already pressurised Google, Nationwide, Burberry and Lush among almost 3000 other companies to join the national movement as accredited Living Wage employers. Now it's time for Topshop to step up too.
Topshop tycoon owner Philip Green has already proven his failure to care for his staff by washing his hands from dealing with the pension deficit following the collapse of BHS. Continuing to refuse becoming a Living Wage employer is yet another reckless move and will further damage his reputation.
Topshop is already receiving loads of pressure with the strikes, and if we add our voices from across the country in solidarity now, we can make sure Topshop can't ignore us anymore. Let's come together to make Topshop pay workers fairly, and show the world people power is against working poverty.
Tell Topshop to stand by its workers by becoming a Living Wage employer now.
