Is your retirement plan funding destruction?
TIAA-CREF has over four hundred million dollars invested in the palm oil plantation industry. Which means it’s bankrolling exploitative land grabs, mass deforestation, and child labor on a massive scale.
Investors like TIAA-CREF have enabled the palm oil industry to explode over the past two decades, making palm oil the world’s most widely used vegetable oil, and financing the destruction of MILLIONS of hectares of rainforest.
Despite public commitments to Environmental and Social Risk Management, TIAA-CREF’s palm oil record is clear: the company talks a good game, but that’s it.
TIAA-CREF is one of the largest investment firms in the U.S. It has the responsibility to commit to human rights -- and the power to hit the destructive palm oil industry where it hurts -- the wallet.
Tell TIAA-CREF to divest from land grabs and forest destruction.
The environmental costs of palm oil expansion are jaw-dropping. Deforestation across Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Sub-Saharan Africa has pushed vulnerable species such as orangutans and Sumatran elephants to be designated as critically endangered.
And deforestation in Southeast Asia has made Indonesia the third largest carbon emitter in the world.
The costs of reckless palm oil policy have also been felt by Indigenous peoples across the globe. Their livelihoods have been ruined by land grabs that incorporate small-scale local farms into the global palm oil commodity chain.
Meanwhile, palm oil plantations are rife with inhumane working conditions, modern slavery, child labor, and other human rights abuses.
We’re coming together with Friends of the Earth to put the pressure on TIAA-CREF. We know we can win. Just last year, PepsiCo finally released a palm oil commitment in direct response to pressure from SumOfUs members like you.
Now, we need to harness that same power to hold the investors bankrolling bad palm oil policy accountable.
Tell TIAA-CREF to commit to human rights and sustainability by adopting a Deforestation and Land Grab-Free investment policy!
