Once upon a time, in one of France’s poorest neighborhoods, Kamel and his McDonald's coworkers took on the fast-food industry and turned their workplace into something magical.
For 20 years, Kamel and his union fought for better working conditions for McDonald's employees looking to make their lives better in an area of Marseille riddled by unemployment, poverty and violence.
McDonald's hated that. They used every dirty trick in the book to shut Kamel and the union down, including threats to his life... but our heroes always prevailed. Defeated, sour, and utterly incapable to accept that their employees could be happy, McDonald's decided to close this restaurant in order to destroy Kamel and the union.
But instead of giving up, Kamel and his colleagues occupied the space and, at the height of the pandemic, turned it into a community food bank that has rehired part of the staff fired by McDonald's.
This magical place is called l’Après M ("the After M" for after McDonald's) – and it needs you.
Kamel and l’Après M volunteers are still threatened by McDonald's and want to become independent of the goodwill of local politicians, who defend them today but could stop doing so tomorrow. They only have a few months to get the 450,000 euros they need to buy the building outright and convert it into a full community centre, with a training space, a proper food bank, a community restaurant and many other things that will make the neighborhood great for everyone!
Can you help Kamel and his community make this fairy tale survive?
