The news platform responsible for broadcasting and expanding on the most odious and hateful parts of Donald Trump’s election campaign is planning a massive global expansion. And France—which has laws against hate speech—is its first target.
It goes without saying that we have to stop this.
Breitbart News, piloted by Trump’s new chief strategist Steve Bannon, is an outright white nationalist site with repulsive views on virtually any topic you can name. It has published articles arguing men are smarter than women, spread lies about Hillary Clinton’s ill health, and has called Muslims in Europe and North America a 'ticking time bomb.'
Breitbart is where Trump’s worst supporters get their news and spread their hate. It’s just been given the keys to the castle in America, and now it’s coming for Europe -- unless we stand together now and force the French government to stop it.
Tell the French Government to keep hate out of Europe. Reject Breitbart’s global expansion.
Currently, Breitbart has plans to start operating in Germany and France and wants websites in these countries operational in time for pivotal 2017 elections where centre-right and left parties are going to face strong challenges from hard-right rivals.
It’s already no exaggeration to say that fascism has a foothold in the White House. A hero of Bannon’s, Richard Spencer, just held a white power rally in a US federal building where several attendees gave the Nazi salute.
Now Breitbart News wants to capitalize on this moment, normalize fascism and go global. The company’s president and chief executive officer was just quoted saying, 'The goal is to become a global news network.'
This hasn’t been lost on corporations, including T-Mobile, BMW and Kellogg’s cereal, who are pulling their ads from Breitbart -- along with 200 other corporations -- as quickly as they can. It’s a massive risk for these global brands to take aim at the preferred news outlet of the most powerful man on the planet—but even corporations sometimes know when to take a stand.
SumOfUs is launching a massive global campaign targeting Breitbart News thanks to over 1,200 SumOfUs members who have already chipped in to make this work possible. And while we run campaigns targeting advertisers and media regulators, we also have a key opportunity in France to stop Breitbart from ever opening up shop. But we have to act now.
