Get ready. The European Parliament is about to vote on a resolution that would support a ban on glyphosate -- a core ingredient of Monsanto’s RoundUp and a ‘probable’ carcinogen according to the World Health Organization -- for a period of 15 years.
Resistance to the license renewal is fierce -- MEPs from Italy, France, Sweden and the Netherlands oppose letting this literally poisonous herbicide threaten our health and the health of our children for the next decade and a half. But others are inexplicably sitting on the fence.
This is an historic moment in Europe’s fight against Big Agro behemoths like Monsanto and Dupont. Because of the incredible work of SumOfUs members and our allies across Europe, we have a real chance of winning this vote and defeating the license renewal.
Stand up now and remind our MEPs they are accountable to us, not Monsanto. End glyphosate’s license in Europe now.
The momentum behind us is unbelievable. Less than a month ago, Monsanto and its cronies in the European Parliament had every reason to expect that this license would get renewed without a fuss. No one was counting on NGOs, scientists and tens of thousands of SumOfUs community members across Europe to demand their governments place our health above the profits of multinational agro-chemical corporations.
No one, that is, but us.
Our pressure has already forced a postponement of the vote until May -- but next week comes a crucial vote where the European Parliament will vote on a resolution to deny any license renewal for glyphosate until an independent scientific review can examine the evidence. You know, because of the cancer thing. If we win this preliminary vote, it will pave the way to total victory in May.
Remind MEPs that they must put our health above the bottom line of the agro-chemical industry. Vote Glyphosate out of Europe.
Passing this resolution would be a nightmare for Monsanto. RoundUp is the best-selling herbicide in the world and this vote would cripple its reputation across the EU.
Here's what the director of the European Crop Protection Association (Bayer, Dow, Monsanto, BASF, etc..) said in response to news that the European Commission was forced to postpone glyphosate licensing vote: “We are very upset that countries were influenced by significant political pressure from NGOs.” In other words, people power is getting on Monsanto nerves.
Friend, this means we can curb Monsanto's power. It’s an unprecedented opportunity. Let’s seize it.
Tell our MEPs to put an end to glyphosate in Europe now.
