Nestlé wants to take 400 gallons of water per minute from a tiny township in Michigan, up from the 250 gallons per minute it currently takes. This amount is way too much and threatens the rivers and streams of the area that are already taxed.
This kind of disgusting greed is nothing new from Nestlé and must be stopped before the wells run dry and Nestlé is laughing its way to the bank.
The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has the power to stop Nestlé’s horrible plan and protect Michigan’s water. We’ve already flooded the DEQ with comments asking to deny Nestlé its permit and are awaiting a decision. A huge outcry now could be the nudge the DEQ needs to make the right decision.
Will you please join me in signing the petition to tell the DEQ to deny Nestlé’s greedy water grab in Michigan?
Nestlé makes billions of dollars pumping water from Michigan. And it’s willing to do whatever it takes to make more money, including undermining the township’s democratic right to protect its water and trying to pump so much water that it threatens a townships water supply.
Osceola township is just down the road from Flint, MI where residents are still in the midst of one of the most notorious water crises ever. It’s criminal that Nestlé is trying to take good clean water from this area -- and the township knows this. Thanks to the lawsuit efforts of Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation, Nestle has been forced to reduce its pumping from 400 gallons a minute at another pumping station 20 miles away from Osceola township. Now we need to pressure DEQ to make the right decision this time around and deny a permit get 400 gallons a minute from Osceola.
SumOfUs has a history of fighting Nestlé -- and winning. Over 325,000 caring members like you called on Ontario decision makers to reject Nestlé’s permit renewal in Ontario and that move led to the Premier making a two-year moratorium on new water-taking permits in the province. We know that when we work together we can stop Nestlé from stealing our precious water.
