Facebook has failed to catch even 10 percent of prosecuted child sexual grooming or exploitation cases which used its platform -- and over 60% of reports about child sexual abuse material involved Facebook messenger!
What’s worse -- those are only the cases we know about!
It’s bad enough that Facebook is helping dark forces to break our democracy, but we cannot permit it to put our kids at risk.
Let’s force Facebook to adopt a children’s charter - to protect our kids from online predators.
Last year a previously convicted sex offender used Facebook messenger to recruit and abuse a 13-year old girl, one of hundreds of prosecuted cases where law enforcement had to bang on the door of Facebook to get enough information to put the monster in jail.
Tell Facebook to put kids first and commit to a children’s charter.
Together we can force Facebook and other platforms to:
- Educate -- fund the development of national education programs that teach online literacy and safety to the youngest users.
- Inform -- give young people full access and understanding of who is using, viewing and profiting from their personal data and likeness. Require proactive consent for all data use.
- Empower -- make it easy for young people to remove, edit and delete all content they create or upload. Make it possible for them to completely clear their profiles and erase their online presence if they wish.
Tell Facebook to put kids first and commit to a children’s charter.
We know this can work -- last year Facebook banned White Nationalists from using its platform, after thousands of us wrote to Mark Zuckerberg. Now Facebook is running scared from the clamor to protect kids online -- together we can force Facebook to act.
