It looks like Donald Trump is getting ready to approve the merger from hell. Monsanto and Bayer want to form a $66-billion mega-corporation that will control almost every bite we eat.
This would be a disaster for bees and other pollinators, for farmers and for our food supply. It would be more bee-killing neonics, more glyphosate on our plates and more corporate bullying of anyone who threatens its bottom line.
Trump met with the CEOs of Bayer and Monsanto earlier this month and had a “productive meeting.” If you’re keeping score, he met with zero scientists, beekeepers, food ecologists or anyone who thinks we should sacrifice our entire food system to line the pockets of shareholders.
It’s time President Trump heard from us. Tell the White House why this merger should never, ever happen.
The thing is, a massive, unprecedented merger like this goes against nearly everything Trump said on his campaign trail. If Bayer’s takeover succeeds, it will put 59% of the world’s seeds and 64% of its pesticides in the hands of just four companies. That will mean higher seed prices, higher pesticide use, more farmers getting sued and almost no accountability. We need to make a public stand that this straight-up monopoly will destroy competition as well as our planet.
Half a million SumOfUs members have already signed a petition to stop this merger, but we need to do more. We want to flood Donald Trump’s inbox with emails that tell him why this takeover will be an absolute nightmare for our economy, our food supply and our climate. If he won’t meet with the real stakeholders of this $66 billion catastrophe-in-waiting, we’re going to take the fight to him.
Send the president a message. The Bayer-Monsanto merger is a nightmare. End it now.
