The Ktunaxa people are fighting to protect an ancient sacred site from being destroyed for a ski resort. The proposed Jumbo Glacier ski resort, in BC, is going to be built on a site where the Ktunaxa have worshipped for thousands of years. Despite this, the Supreme Court just ruled that the destructive project could go ahead.
Oberti Resort Designs and Pheidias Group, the planners and developers of the project, are excited to move forward with the resort and have no qualms in desecrating a sacred site in order to make money.
It’s time these developers started taking reconciliation seriously, do the right thing and stop the project. A huge public outcry now will let the developers know that opposition to the project is still strong.
Tell Oberti Resort Designs and Pheidias Group to drop the Jumbo Glacier resort project and respect indigenous sacred sites.
Jumbo Glacier Resort is a multi-million dollar project that would cover 270 acres of pristine grizzly bear habitat, fragmenting the wildlife corridor and contributing to the decline of the bears, held sacred to the Ktunaxa.
The resort project has faced opposition every step of the way since it was first conceived of in 1991. In the last 26 years, First Nations and East Kootenay residents have opposed the project, even bravely blockading the site in 2008 and 2009. Continued pressure now will let the developers know that, despite the Supreme Court’s ruling, opposition for the project is not going away.
The developers, over and over again, have ignored the wishes of First Nations, putting profits ahead of all other considerations. In the current climate of reconciliation, now is the time to show respect for indigenous rights instead of barrelling over sacred sites in the name of profit.
Will you join me in signing the petition to tell Oberti Resort Designs and Pheidias Group to drop the Jumbo Glacier resort project and respect indigenous sacred sites.
