An Arab American man was just kicked off his Delta Airlines flight -- for speaking Arabic. The good news: the whole exchange was caught on camera, and people are outraged.
The passenger in question is none other than Adam Saleh, a YouTube celebrity with millions of followers. Saleh said “uncomfortable” passengers called for the captain to remove him from the plane after he had a short phone conversation in Arabic with his mother.
The video has gone viral, and Delta says it’s “conducting a full review” of the incident. But this isn’t the first time Delta has been caught in a racist scandal. Just months ago, a man almost died because Delta refused to believe a black woman on board could be a doctor. It’s time for Delta to be proactive in confronting in-flight racism.
Tell Delta to introduce proper bias training for its staff and take a committed stance against racial profiling on flights.
Saleh’s story isn’t an isolated incident: Delta has a long record of racial profiling on its flights. In August, a Muslim couple was kicked off a Delta flight for saying “Allah” and texting. That same month, a white Trump supporter called women passengers “Hillary b--ches,” and the flight crew did nothing.
With thousands of online supporters already pledging to boycott Delta, it’s clear customers want to choose an airline that takes active steps to oppose bigotry. Especially when Islamophobic and racist incidents are on the rise post-election, Delta needs to take steps to keep ALL of its passengers safe, not just “uncomfortable” white people.
After coming under fire for refusing to believe a black woman passenger could be a doctor, Delta announced that it would expand diversity and inclusion trainings to its “frontline” employees. But that’s not enough: if these incidents are to come to an end, we need to demand a commitment for universal bias training for all Delta employees.
Demand Delta introduce bias training for all its staff and end racial profiling on its flights.
