A small and vulnerable population of grizzly bears in Montana could disappear forever if two giants mines are allowed to set up shop in, and adjacent to, the protected wilderness area.
Hecla is proposing two major mines in the Cabinet Mountain wilderness area -- home to a small and vulnerable population of grizzly bears. And the mines could go through if Congress weakens the environmental review of mining on our public lands. That’s why we’re working with our friends at Earthworks to stop it.
Congress is expected to make its decision on whether to weaken environmental protections for mining on public lands any day now. Timing is critical to protect the majestic grizzly bear from being destroyed by one mining company’s greed.
Tell Congress to protect the grizzly bear and oppose the “critical minerals” amendment.
The grizzly bear population in the Cabinet Mountain wilderness area is only around 50 animals. According to grizzly bear biologists, this population is the smallest and most vulnerable in the continental United States. And without our help, these beautiful bears could be gone for good.
And if Congress makes this amendment, it’s not just these grizzly bears that are at risk but many species that are threatened from extraction and development on our public lands.
When SumOfUs and Earthworks work together, great things happen. When we partnered with Earthworks to stop the Pebble Mine from destroying the largest sockeye salmon run in the world, almost 50,000 members like you signed a petition to stop investment in the mine by First Quantum. And our pressure worked. First Quantum pulled investment and Pebble Mine is one step closer to being stopped for good.
We know that, when we all work together, we can protect grizzly bears and other threatened animals from mining companies.
Congress: protect grizzly bears and don’t allow mining in wilderness areas.
