A recent report by Greenpeace has found that more than two million tonnes of single-use plastic soft drinks bottles are sold each year. What's worse, only 6.6% of these bottles are made up from recycled plastic.
Coca-Cola refused to be a part of the survey. As the world’s largest soft drinks company – with sales of nearly 2 billion drinks per day - Coca-Cola’s unaccounted-for plastic packaging makes Big Soda's actual plastic footprint much, much, larger.
These throwaway plastic bottles are a cheap option for soft-drinks companies, but the worlds oceans and the vast array of marine life that they support are paying the price for it.
It’s currently cheaper for soda companies to buy virgin plastic than recycled plastic material. So in interest of maximising their short terms profits, Coca-Cola has made no commitments, targets or timelines to reduce the amount of single-use plastic bottles they use.
We need to call on companies like Coca-Cola that produce and sell vast amounts of plastic packaging to introduce policies and set targets to cut their plastic footprint. It’s time multinationals took responsibility for their ocean-clogging plastic waste.
Join us in calling on Coca-Cola to produce 100% recycled bottles and phase out single-use plastics.
