Big News. An unprecedented federal court ruling has invalidated coal giant Adani’s controversial native title deal, which could delay the development of its mega coal mine.

But now attorney general George Brandis is working frantically to reverse the decision to save the Adani mine.

Native Title enshrines the right of Indigenous people to make decisions about their own land.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a right to be consulted on decisions that affect them -- and George Brandis wants to ride roughshod over that.

A federal court ruling earlier this month found that all representatives in a native title claim need to endorse the Indigenous land use agreements -- which support mining, agriculture, or infrastructure projects -- for them to be valid.

This didn't happen with the Adani mine.

The federal court ruling strikes out many existing native title deals. It puts Adani’s Reef-wrecking Carmichael coal mine and other resource projects in doubt.

But Brandis, with Malcolm Turnbull’s approval, is working urgently to rush through legislation that will amend the ruling and change the Native Title Act.

Mining companies are already making millions of dollars of profit each year off of Indigenous land, often paying minimal compensation to traditional owners. Now Brandis wants to tip the scales even more in favour of the mining industry.

Only a few days ago, this government told us that it is committed to involving Indigenous Australians in decisions that affect them.

Recently, we worked with partners to help pressure the Norwegian bank DNB to pull its funding from the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline. The pipeline is threatening the Standing Rock Sioux's ancestral land and water supply in North Dakota.

And now here in Australia, we must call on Brandis to ensure no changes are made to the Native Title Act that put the profit of mining companies like Adani above that of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders’ right to decide what is done on their land.

This is and always will be Aboriginal land. It’s about time George Brandis recognises this.
