Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is flying to Vancouver today and it's rumoured that BC Premier Christy Clark is going to use the opportunity to grant Kinder Morgan the permits it needs to built the Trans Mountain Expansion pipeline.
Kinder Morgan needs a favourable provincial environmental assessment to proceed and build this project -- and the province can still stop this pipeline by withholding key permits to Kinder Morgan. We don't have long to act.
Let's show Premier Clark, who faces an election in just a few months, that her job depends on her rejecting this dangerous project.
Tell B.C. Premier Christy Clark to reject Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline.
Justin Trudeau may have approved this pipeline, but you know what else had Cabinet approval? The Northern Gateway pipeline. And we stopped that, too.
It’s not just that we can’t afford to build this pipeline, which would add 30 more supertankers to Vancouver’s harbour waters every month. The latest climate science warns us that we can’t afford to build any pipeline, anywhere. That’s even without a burst pipe (this exact pipeline has already had four spills since 2005) or a tanker spill in the Salish Sea (that Kinder Morgan has already said it won’t help clean up).
It’s been a tough year, 2016. But amidst all the bad news, there are finally signs that things are starting to turn around. Standing Rock just showed the world what it means to defend the land. They took on one of the world’s biggest oil companies and law enforcement from at least four states. And against all odds—they won.
And if that’s not enough, take comfort in the incredible size and breadth of the opposition to this pipeline. Local governments, environmentalists, ordinary Canadians young and old, not to mention 20,000 SumOfUs members and counting. And above all, the courageous Coast Salish and B.C. interior First Nations have been leading this fight from the beginning. And they won’t give up until it’s won.
Right now, we can ratchet up the pressure on BC Premier Christy Clark so she knows she can't grant key permits for this project without us holding her to account.
Tell Premier Clark to reject Kinder Morgan’s permits.
