A&W uses tens of millions of straws every year. These single-use bits of plastic are the sixth most discarded piece of garbage in the world. It’s no wonder most of them end up in the ocean where they can get wedged up the nose of a sea turtle or ingested by a sea bird.
A&W is one of the biggest fast food chains in Canada. If we can get A&W onboard, it will prevent billions of straws ending up in our oceans.
A&W is already committed to limiting its impact on the environment, including serving reusable mugs for in-store orders. A huge outcry could be just what A&W needs to make the right decision and stop using plastic straws.
Will you please join me in signing to tell A&W to stop using plastic straws?
Around 8 million tons of plastic enter our oceans every year -- enough that, by 2050, there would be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Not only that, but the plastic doesn’t degrade. It just breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces that end up in the stomachs of birds, fish and sea mammals, eventually killing them as their stomachs fill with plastic instead of food.
Getting rid of straws would make a major dent in cleaning up our ocean and help save wildlife from the plague of plastic.
SumOfUs has worked before on banning straws. Last year, over 376,000 caring members like you signed a petition to get McDonald’s to ban plastic straws. And right now, our campaign to get straws banned in the UK is winning massive victories. Thanks to our campaigning, shops, cafes and businesses in every major city and town will provide refill points by 2021 to lessen plastic waste! We know that, when we work together, we can take on fast food giants like A&W and protect our oceans.
Please join me in signing today to tell A&W to stop using plastic straws.
