At the Paris climate talks last December, 188 countries committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions as part of a global effort to keep global warming well below two degrees. But when corporations across the world aren’t reporting entire segments of their emissions, we’re facing an uphill battle.

Most of the biggest corporate polluters report on direct emissions. But unreported indirect emissions in corporate supply chains often make up the majority of a corporation’s carbon footprint. Raw material extraction, packaging, transportation -- all these processes can go wholly unreported.

Motorcycle giant Yamaha recognizes reducing greenhouse gas emissions as “the most critical environmental issue facing the world today.” But while Yamaha has committed to reductions in its carbon emissions, we don’t know anything about the impact of its vast supply chain -- the network of suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors that make a motorbike possible.

Tell Yamaha to step up in the fight against climate change by disclosing its supply chain emissions.

We need to use all the tools at our disposal to take on climate change. Which is why we’re working to hold corporations accountable for the emissions they pass off to middleman manufacturers in faraway countries.

Slowly, we are seeing leaders in the tech and auto industries facing up to the environmental impact of their supply chains. Ford Motors discloses emissions from its network of 4,400 supplier sites in 60+ countries. Meanwhile, Apple is tapping solar energy in its Chinese supply chain to reduce a projected 20 million metric tons of carbon dioxide by 2020.

It’s time Yamaha live up to its commitment to greenhouse gas reductions. The motorbike giant has the opportunity to be a leader in its field by disclosing, and committing to reduce, carbon emissions in its supply chain. Let’s push Yamaha to be straight with its GHG disclosures by accounting for supply chain emissions.
