Supermarket Iceland has just announced it’s going plastic free, to help end the scourge of plastic pollution.

It has been revealed that UK supermarkets create nearly 1 million tonnes of plastic packaging waste a year! That’s enough to cover the whole of Greater London to a depth of 2.5cm. 

But supermarkets are also all desperately competing against one another, so they care if customers are unhappy. SumOfUs is a community of millions of people. Together, we could sway other supermarkets to follow Iceland’s lead and scrap plastic -- for good.

Plastic dumped into the sea can get stuck in sea turtles’ nostrils, lodged in the stomachs of baby seabirds, and end up eaten by fish -- spreading dangerous toxic pollutants into our food supply.

Iceland’s managing director Richard Walker said: “The world has woken up to the scourge of plastics. A truckload is entering our oceans every minute, causing untold damage to our marine environment and ultimately humanity. The onus is on retailers… to take a stand and deliver meaningful change.”

There’s no reason other supermarkets can’t go ‘plastic free’ like Iceland.
