There’s a TTIP-like trade deal looming on the horizon. And we can stop it, but only with your help.
You may have never heard of CETA (the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) -- but it’s a huge trade deal negotiated between the EU and Canada that gives corporations unprecedented amounts of power to meddle with democratic laws and is every bit as dangerous as TTIP.
Time is running out to stop it -- leaders have signed CETA, and it’s due to be ratified this year.
But there’s one country that could topple this deal -- and that’s Austria. Austrian leaders have already been very critical of TTIP, and we could force them to reject CETA too.
We’ve got less than a month to convince Austria’s leaders to reject CETA. With our partners, we’ll be organising attention-grabbing stunts and following politicians wherever they go so they don’t miss our message.
Can you chip in to help stop CETA -- a dangerous trade deal like TTIP?
CETA creates a new set of rules for corporations. It gives lobbyists scary amounts of power to shape our laws. Like TTIP, it gives corporations the right to sue governments in secret courts.
CETA will severely curb our governments’ abilities to protect us and the environment. It will pose risk to food safety standards, labour laws, and climate action. One of the scary things is that the deal will block the EU’s ability to stop the use of Canadian tar sands oil -- one of the dirtiest forms of fossil fuels.
If we can get the Austrian Council of Ministers to oppose this deal, it would give us the best fighting chance of stopping CETA at the European level. Right now, we’re not sure what is required at the EU level for CETA to pass, but if it’s a unanimous vote, then Austria’s rejection of the deal could be a gamechanger.
From the beginning, the SumOfUs community has been at the forefront of derailing dangerous trade deals. Together with our partner organisations, we’re a part of the biggest citizens’ initiative ever to stop trade deals like TTIP and CETA -- there are a whopping 3 million of us speaking out. We’ve lobbied ministers, helped organise rallies, and placed hard-hitting ads all over the media.
If we stand together again to make sure our message is heard in Austria, we can stop CETA. But we don’t have much time.
Please, can you chip in to help stop CETA, one of the biggest corporate power grabs of a generation?
