A new and potentially devastating Ag-Gag bill passed the Arkansas house and state senate earlier this month - and if signed into law - will prevent whistleblowers from exposing dangerous working conditions across a variety of industries.
The bill HB 1665 is so broadly written it would bar recording or collecting data on factory farms, puppy mills, and other animal facilities known for extreme cruelty, but also practices like abuse at day-care facilities, unsanitary conditions at restaurants, or violations of environmental regulations.
If HB 1665 passes, it will become illegal for whistleblowers to expose wrongdoing at any business in Arkansas. Giant agriculture companies will be able to sue whistleblowers directly up to tens of thousands of dollars for exposing animal cruelty or environmental pollution.
A recent poll by the Humane Society found that 75 percent of the people polled oppose the legislation. So do we. These laws are unconstitutional, infringe on free speech and civil liberties, and endanger animals, workers, and children.
Help us urge Arkansas’s Governor Asa Hutchinson to stop pandering to big business and veto dangerous this bill.
