The European Parliament is about to vote on changes to the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI), the only tool that lets citizens have a direct and formal say in EU decision-making.
As part of our 2017 citizens’ initiative to ban the toxic weedkiller glyphosate, our partners designed software to simplify the impenetrable ECI process. Over a million people -- including thousands of SumOfUs members like you -- used it to push the EU to pass groundbreaking new food safety laws. But now, the European Parliament wants to make that software illegal.
The vote’s in less than two weeks, and as it stands, we’re in danger of losing a valuable weapon in our arsenal against corporate power. But if enough of us band together now, we could stop this destructive reform in its tracks.

For a citizen’s initiative to be so much as glanced at by the EU, it needs one million or more supporters -- but for years, the EU’s convoluted system for the ECI made it near-impossible for a proposal to gain traction.
Our partners’ software changed that, making it easier for any eligible citizen to participate. Thanks to the streamlined process, our anti-glyphosate initiative was the first successful ECI since 2012.
And guess what? Just last month, as a direct result of that initiative, the EU passed food law reforms that will soon lead to far more corporate transparency about the chemicals and pesticides that wind up on our plates.
We can’t just stand by and let the European Parliament put up more barriers to our people power. We’ve got to speak up loud to ensure this important tool doesn’t get voted away, so that we can continue to push for more corporate accountability, fewer pesticides and a truly democratic EU. Will you join us?
Tell EU Parliament members that if they support the ECI changes, you won’t support them!
