For decades, negligent Shell oil subsidiaries have spilled millions of barrels of oil into the area surrounding the Niger River Delta. Now, 40,000 impacted Nigerians are taking their case to Britain’s High Court.
Thanks to decades of negligence, river water is contaminated with oil and cancer-causing compounds. But lacking other options, Ogale and Bille Nigerian people have to drink it every day.
From destroying fishermen’s and farmers’ livelihoods, to contaminating the drinking water of entire communities, Shell must be held responsible for the damage it has caused. Stand with 40,000 Nigerians taking their case to Britain’s High Court and demand Shell finally pay what it owes.
Stand with 40,000 Nigerians demanding accountability from Shell for decades of oil spills that have devastated communities along the Niger River Delta.
Decades of oil spills have made drinking water along the Delta almost certainly carcinogenic. A World Health Organization report found that one area’s water contained carcinogenic benzene at levels 900 times higher than what is safe for human consumption.
For years, Shell has tried to blame thieves and vandals for the 7,000 oil spills linked to its Nigerian subsidiary between 1970 and 2000. But a landmark case in 2009 found Shell responsible for spills caused by oil theft it didn’t take steps to prevent. Led by impacted Bodo community members, that case won $83.5 million in compensation from Shell -- proof that people power can hold this oil giant accountable.
With lawyers taking Shell to court once again on behalf of the Ogale and Bille people, this is our chance to stand with Nigerians most impacted by decades of Shell’s negligence. It’s time Shell finally take responsibility for cleaning up its mess and give fair compensation to the thousands of Nigerians whose lives have been harmed by its reckless profiteering.
