Reports have surfaced that the State Bank of India (SBI) is about to hand over $1 billion to the Adani Group to help it build one of the largest coal mines in the world. If it does, it could be the death warrant of the nearby Great Barrier Reef.
For years, SumOfUs members have stood with the Wangan and Jagalingou Traditional Owners and hundreds of thousands of others to stop this reef-wrecking mine.
And it’s worked: people power has cut off the mine from every source of finance in the world and so far Adani hasn’t dug up a single piece of coal.
But with the stroke of a pen the State Bank of India could undo it all and give Adani what it needs to finally start tearing open one of the biggest untapped coal basins in the world.
We have a short window to prevent this loan, but we can do it. Just like we did when Adani turned to SBI for help six years ago.
