Thousands of children in Indonesia, some as young as 8 years old, are at the bottom of the supply chain for many tobacco companies—these children are getting exposed to nicotine and toxic pesticides while tending tobacco that goes into products sold by multinational and Indonesian companies.

Some tobacco companies have policies against the use of child labor but none of them bar all children under 18 from working in direct contact with tobacco. None do enough to root out the problem and protect children from the dangers associated with tobacco farming.

Child tobacco workers can absorb nicotine through their skin, and many suffer nausea, vomiting, headaches, and dizziness – all symptoms of acute nicotine poisoning. They also face other dangers while working in stifling heat. Some handle toxic pesticides associated with long-term health consequences like cancer, learning problems, and reproductive health issues. They can cut themselves with sharp tools, strain their arms and backs lifting heavy loads, and climb onto narrow beams in barns to hang tobacco to dry – with nothing to protect them from falling.

Tobacco companies should take responsibility and make sure children aren’t risking their health working on farms in their supply chains. They shouldn’t profit from child labor.
