WhatsApp is used by 2 BILLION of us worldwide -- and its parent company Facebook is trying to get rich off our personal data!
Facebook cross-references data from its platforms and uses it to let companies target us with ads and other recommended content. Now confusion around new WhatsApp data policies is shining a light on Facebook's get-rich-through-manipulation tactics.
The media has noticed, but grassroots consumer groups are yet to stand up in protest. We need to change that in a hurry -- add your name to the petition and share this widely.
In 2016, Facebook offered WhatsApp users an option to opt out of having their data used for commercial purposes. But they only offered it for a brief period of time, and they still collected the data, they just agreed to not "use" it.
A million Facebook scandals have come to light since 2016 -- including how they allowed our data to be harvested and used to manipulate us. The fact is: we know better now. We've seen repeatedly how Big Tech is failing to protect its users from all kinds of harms and data privacy issues.
We must urgently sound the alarm and force Facebook to give *all* WhatsApp users an opportunity to opt out of having their data collected and used for commercial purposes. If Facebook wants to get rich off our information, the least it could do is ask for permission in a crystal clear way -- not riddled with confusion!
And the timing couldn't be more ripe -- Facebook is facing a massive anti-trust case in the US, and may be forced to break into smaller companies. How Facebook handles our call for data protection on WhatsApp could feed into how this plays out in the courts.
Add your name and share this widely -- we have a real chance to protect WhatsApp from becoming another Facebook manipulation tool -- but only if thousands of us demand it.
