The Arctic wildlife refuge is home to the porcupine caribou herd, the last healthy caribou herd in North America. But now, these vulnerable animals are in danger as the Trump administration plans to roll out massive seismic tests right in the heart of the caribous’ calving territory.
This wildlife refuge has been undisturbed by humans for over 30 years but now Trump wants to let Big Oil wreck this precious wilderness. Caribou are extremely sensitive to human disturbance, especially as they give birth. This oil testing could seriously harm the last healthy and vital caribou herd in North America.
The good news is there’s still time to stop it. Tests are supposed to start until summer of 2019 and that gives us plenty of opportunity to let Trump’s administration know that the preservation of these majestic animals is more important than oil profits.
Tell the US interior department: save the caribou and stop seismic testing in the Arctic wildlife refuge.
The porcupine caribou herd is an integral part of life for the Gwitchin nation who rely on the caribou for food, spiritual connection and cultural continuity. Threatening the caribou is a direct threat to the Gwitchin way of life.
Caribou are incredibly sensitive to human disturbance and, because of the protection of the Arctic wildlife refuge, the porcupine herd is the only herd that is not experiencing dangerous decline in populations.
Oil and gas companies make tens of billions of dollars in profit every year. This precious caribou herd must be put before corporate profits.
SumOfUs has fought against seismic testing before. When the New Zealand government announced plans to conduct deep sea seismic tests more than 100,000 members like you signed a petition calling on New Zealand’s president to stop.
We know that, when we all work together, we can stop seismic testing -- and protect precious caribou herds.
