The Beelier Wetlands is a rich ecosystem of environmental, cultural and educational importance. A habitat for wildlife with outstanding biodiversity, Aboriginal cultural and spiritual sites and important recreational areas, the wetlands are currently under threat from the proposed Roe Highway extension.
An important habitat for threatened species, including the Carnaby’s black cockatoo and the forest red-tailed black cockatoo, the extension – known as Roe 8 – has been fought by community groups in the courts and is opposed by the local council and state Labor and Greens politicians.
Yet the WA Liberal Government wants to push Roe 8 plans ahead - and what’s worse, is that they’re hiring contractors with a history of corporate wrongdoing and corruption.
GHD, for example, have engaged in “repeated instances of fraudulent practices” and were blacklisted by the World Bank after being found to have defrauded a fund set up for Indonesian victims of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. The other two big contractors - CIMIC and AECOM - have been found guilty of multi-million dollar bribery and fraud.
These are the corporations the WA Liberal Government wants to do business with. Business that would involve major clearing, divide a lake system in two, and pose a serious threat to the viability of the lake's fauna populations, breeding areas and plant species.
Labor vowed to scrap the project, it’s time the Liberals did too.
Sign the petition and join the fight to save the precious Beeliar Wetlands.
