One plastic bag takes 1000 years to decompose -- the consequences to our planet and marine life are devastating. A new study showed that unless we act now by 2050 our oceans will contain more plastic than fish.
Supermarkets are flocking to biodegradable plastic bags, welcomed as a green alternative -- but it turns out they’re actually WORSE for our oceans and the creatures that live in it.
And the corporations that make the bags are making millions with little regard for their environmental impacts.
We want to make sure that everyone knows about the dangers of these supposedly “green” alternatives to plastic bags and give our oceans a fighting chance.
Biodegradable plastics are designed to be less durable and capable of degrading quickly in the environment. But the problem, according to the U.N., is that the conditions required for such plastics to break down exist almost exclusively in industrial composters -- not in the ocean.
That means that if your “bio”-plastic bag ends up in the ocean, it takes just as long as a normal plastic bag to break down.
In the meantime, our marine life is choking on the plastic we’ve already filled the ocean with.
BASF and others have been telling consumers a big fat lie about the bio plastic bags. BASF -- the biggest producer of these bio plastic bags -- knows since years that its plastic bags are actually just as bad, if not worse for the environment. In Germany, environmental organisations have been fighting BASF’s claims for years. And now these NGOS are facing costly law-suits because BASF wants to suppress the truth.
But this is where we come in. We’re going to start by making sure that every consumer in the world knows that biodegradable doesn’t mean better.
With your gift, we will launch a massive public awareness campaign to tell the world the truth about bio-plastic. We will instigate further research and use it to pressure supermarkets all over the world not to sell these bio-plastic bags.
This is another cynical move by big corporations like BASF to pedal a supposedly green alternative to unsuspecting consumers. We need your help to spread the truth about these dangerous plastic bags.
A campaign against bio-plastic has already seen some success in Germany, where environmental organisations were able to stop supermarket giants like Aldi from selling these plastic bags under the wrong promise.
So we know it’s possible. It’s critical we can support these efforts before it’s too late for our oceans -- and for us.
That is why we need your help to spread the dangers of this bio plastic.
Can you chip in?
