Sara Lee’s parent company, Tyson Foods, is one of the few remaining corporations dragging its feet and refusing to phase out deforestation from its supply chain.

So far, the company has refused to adopt a responsible palm oil policy. But pressure is piling up as stories break every other week about the ravages caused by conflict palm oil, and Tyson Foods’ recent involvement in animal abuse. The company is under scrutiny, and it knows it. Now is the time to force Tyson Foods to cut conflict palm oil from its supply chain.

Tyson Foods has adopted an ostrich-like approach, sticking its head in the sand and ignoring the mass destruction of rainforest. The company has also been hiding behind its reliance on the inadequate and widely criticized Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification system.

In the past 25 years, 76 million acres of Indonesian forests have disappeared, a surface equivalent to the entire state of Nevada! Indonesia is the world’s largest producer of palm oil, and experts estimate that the endangered Bornean and Sumatran orangutans will be extinct within 10 years if we don’t stop the rainforest destruction now.

In a repeat of last year’s toxic haze that covered Southeast Asia, forest fires are spreading again across Indonesia, wreaking havoc, and clearing space for palm oil plantations. This is the reality behind Sara Lee desserts.

Hundreds of thousands of SumOfUs members have pushed industry giants such as Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts to adopt time-bound, responsible palm oil policies and lead transformation in the sector. It’s now time for Tyson Foods to join them and cut conflict palm oil from its supply chain.
