After two months of pressure from people like you, Samsung announced it will break ties with the infamous Indonesian rainforest destroyer, Korindo.
We couldn’t have done it without you. From signing petitions to brand-jamming Samsung’s launch of the Galaxy Note 8, it’s taken thousands of us coming together to push Samsung to take this step towards sustainable palm oil.
But the fight isn’t over yet. Samsung is still implicated in some of the worst practices of the palm oil industry in Indonesia: its joint venture partner Ganda Group is infamous for using violence against villagers and driving massive deforestation in Papua.
Samsung’s announcement to ditch Korindo proves we have the attention of its decision makers. Now, it’s time to build on this victory and call on Samsung to go all the way and rid its supply chain of conflict palm oil.
Thank Samsung for cutting ties with Korindo, and urge it to do the same with Ganda Group and other destructive palm oil suppliers.
Samsung was right to cut ties with Korindo, a Korean-Indonesian conglomerate linked to burning and clearing tens of thousands of hectares of pristine rainforest. But Samsung is wrong to think its business partners like Ganda Group are any less dangerous for workers and the environment.
Ganda Group has long been infamous for using violence and coercion against local villagers to clear land for its palm oil plantations, like when it destroyed 150 homes of indigenous Batin Sembilan residents in 2013.
And as recently as August 2017, Ganda Group has been clearing high carbon stock forests in Papua -- natural resources that Indonesian President Joko Widodo has taken special measures to conserve.
As one former Samsung customer told the company during our campaign: “As long as you continue to have an environmentally irresponsible ethos I will not be a customer, and I will share that with my friends and on social media.”
Cutting ties with Korindo was a good first step -- but Samsung needs to go all the way. That’s why we need to come together to capitalize on this win and tell Samsung to rid Ganda Group and all conflict palm oil producers from its supply chain.
Tell Samsung it’s not just Korindo: its entire supply chain needs to be conflict palm oil-free.
