Brexit puts our food standards at risk, but big supermarkets like Sainsbury’s can keep us safe if it steps in.
Negotiations about our exit from the EU started this week, meaning everything is up for grabs including dropping high-standard EU regulations around what goes in our food, and how we treat farmed animals.
It’s a nightmare scenario -- quick trade deals with other countries like the US could open the doors to chlorine-washed chicken, hormone-pumped meat and food grown with 82 banned pesticides hitting our supermarket shelves.
Consumers have fought too hard, and for too long, to see our food and safety standards go up in smoke!
We know that big supermarkets like Sainsbury’s don’t want to see this either -- endless confusion about regulations will only make their jobs harder.
We also know that Sainsbury’s cares what we think. When tens of thousands of SumOfUs members took action, it dropped Krill oil -- a supplement made from the cornerstone of the Antarctic food chain that marine creature like whales rely on for survival -- from its shelves.
Tell Sainsbury’s to commit to maintaining EU standards of food and animal welfare in all products it sells after Brexit.
The double whammy of jettisoning EU standards and striking a quick trade deal with the US opens the door to cheap imports made under factory farm conditions. Supermarkets like Sainsbury’s might be only thing standing between us and poor quality farming and food.
Now is the time to push -- we know Sainsbury’s are proud of its commitment to food that’s sustainable and ethically sourced, and from farms with high animal welfare standards. And we know Sainsbury’s has already shown a commitment towards ethical business practises -- taking out a ‘green loan’ to ensure it becomes more carbon neutral, and taking steps to pay workers above the minimum wage in the UK.
So let’s make Sainsbury’s speak out -- in favour of keeping some of the highest standards in the world when it comes to what goes into our food, and how farm animals are treated. For the sake of our health, our environment, our farm animals and our farmers.
Sainsbury’s: commit to maintaining EU standards of food and animal welfare in all products you sell after Brexit.
