Canada’s largest logging corporation, intent on clearing as much of the precious Boreal forests as it can, is suing Greenpeace for $100 million and calling it a "criminal enterprise."
Resolute Forest Products alleges that Greenpeace and allied organization Stand -- two prestigious, long-standing defenders of the climate -- are guilty of "racketeering" and spreading “malicious lies.” Yes, it’s talking about Greenpeace.
It’s obvious this lawsuit is completely spurious and a not-too-hidden attempt to silence Resolute’s harshest critics -- so it can continue to devastate caribou habitat and run roughshod over Indigenous peoples’ rights. That’s why we have to stand up and show the logging giant that this lawsuit is a terrible idea.
Tell Resolute Forest to drop this ridiculous $100 million lawsuit.
There’s a reason Greenpeace and Stand have been holding Resolute’s feet to the fire. Aside from aggressively logging Canada’s Boreal -- perhaps the world’s last remaining great forest -- it has shown utter disregard for caribou habitat to the point where provincial and federal governments have said it might already be too late to save some herds.
Unsurprisingly, this recklessness has brought the corporation into constant conflict with Canada’s Indigenous population -- the Atikamekw First Nation declared sovereignty over their lands to halt the logging.
Resolute doesn’t expect to get any money from Greenpeace -- it doesn’t even expect to win. But dragging these organizations through the courts will not only waste valuable resources, the “chill” the lawsuit generates will make other, smaller orgs think twice before taking on a giant corporation. That’s why it’s so imperative we raise our voices now. It’s not just the fate of the Boreal forest at stake, it’s the work we all do to keep corporate power in check every single day.
Will you stand up and tell Resolute’s CEO that bullying climate defenders is not OK?
