We know Donald Trump loves to lie. A new analysis shows that he does it almost 10 times a day!
But instead of sounding alarm bells, the media tries to keep “balance” -- the NY Times Editor says “we aren’t part of the resistance”. Telling the truth isn’t “resisting” -- it’s protecting our democracy. And by failing to do so, they are putting not just our country, but the whole world, in danger.
Instead of just “reporting” on events, the media should clarify, even in headlines, when the President lies. Otherwise millions of people heading to the polls will be misled and misinformed. Americans can’t wait for the media to come to their senses about reporting the truth -- we need to fix this NOW.
CNN already does this -- it's time for others to follow.
USA Today has 2.6 million daily readers. The Wall Street Journal has 2.8 million. CBS News has almost 6 million daily viewers. With those stakes, it's not enough to plainly report on what happened and then follow up with a fact check later; the damage is done. All responsible news sources need to show readers and viewers the truth, from the start.
We can absolutely win this. We saw it in how the NY Times backed down after infamously running with the headline "Trump Urges Unity vs. Racism" after the El Paso shooting, fueled by Trump's vitriolic and racist hate. As readers we have historic levels of power, because the internet has given us a huge array of choice. These news agencies depend on our support more than ever before.
We're not asking the media to be Democrats. We're not asking them to be part of the resistance. We're asking them to stand up to disinformation by reporting the truth from the start. CNN and the Washington Post are already doing it...it's time to make it the industry standard.
