Just a couple weeks ago, the word “hydroxychloroquine” was all over social media as a potential COVID-19 treatment. Suppliers sold out of it. Experts warned it was unproven.

Now the study results are in: "There were more deaths among those given hydroxychloroquine versus standard care”.

Allowing fake news and snake oil myths to spread across social media can cost lives, period.

But there’s a simple thing platforms can do — urgently add a “report Covid-19 misinformation” feature on all coronavirus posts so people can easily flag false information. They already do this for voting information — it’s time they do it now when lives are at stake.
