Ray-Ban has teamed up with Facebook to create “Story glasses” that allows people to secretly photograph and record others.
It’s a stalker’s dream product, and sounds like something from a Black Mirror episode. But these problematic glasses are already for sale, with celebrities like Kylie Jenner advertising them on social media.
So far they’re only available in select countries, which means if we raise the alarm now, we can get Luxottica -- Ray-Ban’s parent company -- to stop the rollout and scrap these harmful glasses altogether.
They look like ordinary sunglasses, and offer no obvious indication that recording is taking place. A white light appears, which cannot be seen easily in daylight or from a distance. Activist groups urged the companies to at least make the recording light red, like other devices, only to be ignored.
And beyond being creepy, these glasses are a privacy nightmare. The only way to use them is to give Facebook access to all kinds of sensitive information, which the company will likely harvest for further profits and manipulation.
Our pressure is working. Facebook recently announced it is pausing its plans for Instagram Kids - thanks to a big campaign that our community was a part of. But Luxottica is rarely in the spotlight, and now is our chance to change that. Let’s come together and demand Luxottica stop partnering with Facebook on this creepy and harmful technology.
